Reading Log Sentence Starters

Writing about reading has the potential to be extremely difficult for students.  The first few words can make or break the whole experience.  I like to think of sentence starters as the tipping point. Often, with the first sentence out of the way, thoughts seem to flow, and writing about reading becomes much easier.  Over time and with enough practice, students will be able to craft reading response summaries independently.  Until then, instruction can be scaffolded with sentence starters.  Incorporating the sentence starters listed below into a daily reading response log is an effective way to support writing skills and assess reading comprehension.
