Want to do something different for vocabulary or spelling practice this year? Use your letter tiles to play “Race to Unscramble.” Your students will love it!

1. Fill small containers with the letter tiles required for each spelling or vocabulary word.
2. Split students into two teams. Teams race relay style, each person opening a container and putting the letters in the right order to spell the vocabulary word.
3. The first team to unscramble all their containers is the winner.
4. Make the game more challenging by requiring students to add a definition and a sentence after unscrambling each word.

Immediately, no! It happens every time. Students hear that they will be working together, and they always want to pick their own groups. Despite the best of intentions, it never works out. Do you have a preferred method for grouping students?
